BIG NEWS!
Thanks to the help of approximately 1000 excited first years, some first-class Orientation Leaders, and a dedicated Orientation Committee, Shine Day, our biggest fundraiser, and Bling Bling, another popular O-Week event, collectively brought in $36 573.20, bringing us to a net total of $38 415.39, which doesn't even include the proceeds from our Swing for Shinerama golf tournament. Expect those totals in soon. All of this means that we anticipate making a donation to CCFF for the 2009 calendar year of over $40 000.
It's not too late to get involved! We have until December 31st to make that donation as big as possible!!!
Check back regularly for updates and news!

Our Committment
This year, the Dalhousie Student Union will celebrate forty-four years of involvement with Shinerama, a fundraiser supporting the fight against Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser involving students at over 60 university and college campuses across the country. To date, the Dalhousie community has raised over $682 000 for CF research and care.
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
A fatal, inherited disease which attacks the respiratory and digestive systems;
Approximately 1 in 2,500 children born in Canada have CF;
CF kills more Canadian children than any other inherited disease;
In the past 30 years research has increased the median age of survival of CF sufferers from under 4 years of age to age 37.
Our Shinerama Campaign
While it began in 1964 as a shoe-shining campaign during Orientation week, the campaign has since grown to include a wide variety of shining and non-shining activities under the Shinerama banner. Throughout the entire summer, Dalhousie students will shine shoes, wash cars, coordinate raffles and barbeques, bar-blitzes, a golf tournament, as well as numerous other events, in support of cystic fibrosis research and care. Dalhousie has rightfully earned the reputation as the Shinerama leader in the Atlantic Region.
Shinerama has become a huge tradition and success at Dalhousie. Each year students come together to help raise money for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis a fatal disease that mainly affects the respiratory and digestive systems. Over the past 45 years students across Canada have raised over $18,000,000 and during the past six years have come increasingly close to hitting the million dollar mark for a single year’s campaign. Help us make this year the first year we hit $1,000,000.
On September 8nd, new and returning Dalhousie students will flood the streets of the Halifax Regional Municipality. We will not only shines shoes, we will clean up this whole city! Students will be armed with brooms, mops and buckets. They will pick up litter and do almost anything for a buck. Halifax will shine!
Our Shiners
Our ‘Shiners’ are some of the most active students on campus, and together encompass a large pool of dedicated and engaged Dalhousie students willing to do work on behalf of the Union, the University and the surrounding community. The Dalhousie Student Union represents approximately 16,000 students (92% Canadian, 8% International). For the majority of these students, Shinerama provides an instant social network, it leaves students with a sense of civic responsibility while engaging them in the Dalhousie community.
