Funding for Post Secondary Education
It is the belief of the DSU that all students who meet the academic standards should be able to attend Dalhousie University, regardless of income.
The current and potential future tuition fee increases limit the accessibility of post secondary education for students from low and middle-income families.
Tuition fees have increased beyond the level of inflation since 1986. The impact of this trend upon accessibility, quality, and debt loads continues to be a grave concern for the DSU.
Post Secondary Education in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada is becoming inaccessible. The DSU continues to fight at the University level and through our provincial and federal lobby groups to keep tuition fees down for the entire student body.
The DSU will continue to oppose any policy of cutbacks or restraint that will upset the level of post-secondary education at Dalhousie and will continue to demand that the provincial government publicly reject any federal move to implement further cutbacks in fiscal transfer payments. These cuts to transfer payments are not only crippling to the system but add to an existing crisis of student debt and accessibility to education.
The Government needs to realize that education is not an expense but an investment in the future.
The DSU is a member of two lobby organizations that help the organization achieve its objectives. Federally, the DSU is a member of the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA). Provincially, the DSU is a member of the Alliance of Nova Scotia Student Associations (ANSSA).
