TRAININGS AND CERTIFICATIONS

The DSU offers a variety of Executive trainings that cover different key aspects of society management. Some of these are mandatory, others serve as additional resources but ultimately; it is recommended your society reviews training modules available and join the sessions that will useful to them!

NOTE: All training certifications received are valid from the date granted, until the next May 15th in the Gregorian calendar. This is because, similarly to ratification, training certifications need to be renewed annually. Additionally, your society needs to be ratified to be eligible for Training.


Primary Event Organizer (PEO) Training

Is your society interested in event planning and room bookings? In order to host an event, your society NEEDS to have at least 1-trained Primary Event Organizer (PEO). PEO Training walks you through the basics of room booking, event planning, insurance, and programming guidelines as a society.

  1. Download and review the newest PEO Presentation

  2. Complete the PEO Training Quiz

  3. NOTE: The DSU will be reviewing PEO Quizzes and sending out contracts TWICE per week on Monday(s) and Friday(s). You can expect your Contract within 1 week's time of completion.

  4. The Societies Coordinator will review your quiz, and follow-up with your PEO Contract, and additional details.

  5. Fill out a PEO Contract! You are done and congratulations!

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Accessibility (EDIA) Society Training

NOTE: In regards to the EDIA Training, if you read/reviewed the Society Policy (or you are returning), you ought to know that the EDIA Training is outlined as MANDATORY. A part of successful society management is creating a safe and welcoming space where Society Executives and general members can flourish and succeed. As per Society Policy, your society is responsible for reviewing and submitting the completed EDIA Training within 3 months of your ratification being granted. In addition, the EDIA Presentation will give you a better idea of key concepts and how to apply EDIA practices to societies.

Additionally, we’re excited to announce a new partnership with HRES, Dalhousie’s Human Rights and Equity Services, to offer in-person training on collaborating across cultures and conflict resolution. These sessions will take place every last or second last Thursday of each month from October to March. The Vice-President Internal will circulate a sign-up sheet for these sessions each month.


Treasurer Training

Treasurer Training runs you through the basic knowledge you need to know to manage finances for your society, process an Audit, and apply for grant opportunities with the DSU. It is REQUIRED for your society to: A) Have a trained Treasurer. B)  Have an open bank account with the DSU. C) Transfer signing authorities for said account… if you wish to be eligible for Grants with the DSU.

The new format is a 30-minute, asynchronous course that you can complete online at any time. This change replaces the previous in-person and synchronous sessions.

Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll receive a certificate valid for one year for you and your society.


Society Orientation

An all-encompassing workshop to teach you about the structure of the DSU, benefits available to societies as ratified sub-organizations, different supports and resources available, and all the basic knowledge of what you need to know to get a society up and running on-campus.

Unlike other training modules, Society Orientation is optional as per Society Policy. Due to this, and the high amount of edits required throughout the year, you can use this as a guiding document.
