  • ▼ WHAT RELEVANT EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR THIS POSITION?

I bring firsthand understanding as an international student who faced similar challenges upon starting at Dalhousie two years ago.

My experience as a course representative equipped me to connect with those in need, amplify their voices, and foster communication between the diverse student body and higher authorities.

Additionally, my role as a part-time team leader has honed my skills in leading diverse teams, facilitating various perspectives, and effectively conveying them to higher authorities.

I am excited to leverage these experiences to advocate passionately for our international student community.

▼ WHY DO YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR YOUR DESIRED POSITION?

I believe I am an excellent candidate for this position because my journey as an international student has given me unique insights into the challenges our community faces. I've navigated the same hurdles many of my peers encounter, allowing me to empathize deeply and advocate effectively. Moreover, my experience as a course representative has equipped me with the skills to bridge the gap between students and decision-makers, ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon.

As a dedicated team leader in my part-time job, I've demonstrated my ability to inspire collaboration, embrace diverse perspectives, and drive positive change. I am committed to leveraging these strengths to elevate the experiences of international students and foster a more inclusive and supportive environment at DSU.

▼ LIST THE TOP 3 THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN OFFICE?

    1. Implementing a fair and transparent international fee structure.

    2. Organizing campus events to foster collaboration among diverse international student communities.

    3. Streamlining the process for students to access bursaries and emergency aid funds.

▼ DESCRIBE AND DISCUSS ONE STUDENT ISSUE THAT MATTERS TO YOU.

The issue of international fees coupled with inadequate bursaries and emergency funds is of utmost concern to me. International students already face significant financial challenges, often burdened with higher tuition fees compared to domestic students. These fees can create barriers to accessing higher education and place immense strain on students and their families.

Furthermore, the disparity between the high cost of international fees and the limited availability of bursaries and emergency funds exacerbates financial insecurity among international students. Many students rely on these funds to cover unexpected expenses or to bridge gaps in their finances, yet the current support system often falls short of meeting their needs.

▼ WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT, AND WHY?

I am deeply passionate about advocating for diversity, inclusion, and equity within educational environments. Growing up in a multicultural society and being an international student myself, I've experienced firsthand the transformative power of diverse perspectives and the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and respected.

Education is a fundamental human right, yet many individuals face systemic barriers that limit their access to quality education and hinder their ability to reach their full potential. This disparity fueled my passion for championing equitable opportunities for all students, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

I firmly believe that diversity enriches the learning experience by fostering critical thinking, creativity, and empathy. By promoting diversity and inclusion in educational settings, we not only create a more vibrant and dynamic learning environment but also prepare students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and globalized world.

▼ LIST A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF.

A fun fact about me is that I absolutely love interacting with other students! If you ever spot me on campus, whether it's to address a concern or simply to say hello, I would be genuinely excited to meet you and chat. Don't hesitate to stop by and strike up a conversation – I'm always eager to connect with fellow students and hear their thoughts and experiences.

  • ▼ WHAT RELEVANT EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR THIS POSITION?

Currently serving as the Third Year Representative for the Industrial Engineering Society. I was a general member of the Elections Committee for the previous academic year. I have served as the VP Social and First-Year Representative of the Dalhousie Diploma of Engineering Society.

I am currently a Together@Dal Mentor and have been in this role for almost 2 years. I have represented Dalhousie University at the 2023 Canadian Engineering Leadership Conference as well as the Canadian Engineering Competition.

▼ WHY DO YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR YOUR DESIRED POSITION?

Serving as the Third-Year Representative for the Dalhousie Industrial Engineering Society involved in advocating for the needs of my classmates. Previously I have also been a first-year representative for the Dalhousie Diploma of Engineering society acting as an advocate for first-year engineering students at Engineering Student Council Meetings.

This experience has equipped me with the skills to effectively represent the concerns and interests of international students at a broader level. As a Committee Member for the Dalhousie Student Union Elections Committee, I have gained valuable experience in setting regulations and dealing with complaints and appeals. This demonstrates my ability to engage with procedural matters and handle potential challenges that may arise in a student governance role. Representing Dalhousie University at the Canadian Engineering Leadership Conferences (CELC) provided me with a platform to network with engineering minds and industry leaders from across Canada.

This exposure has broadened my perspective and given me insights into the diverse challenges faced by engineering students, including international students. As an Upper-Year Engineering Mentor with Together@Dal, I advised first-year students on various aspects of university life, including time management, mental health, and academics. This experience enhances my ability to understand and address the concerns of students in a mentorship capacity.

I believe I am a strong candidate for the International Students' Representative position because of my diverse experiences in student governance, advocacy, and event organization. My involvement in leadership roles demonstrates my commitment to addressing student concerns and creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all. Additionally, my engagement at the national level through the Canadian Engineering Leadership Conferences highlights my ability to understand and collaborate on issues that extend beyond the local context.

▼ LIST THE TOP 3 THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN OFFICE?

    1. Plan more cultural events with the International Centre to promote diversity and help students understand different cultures within Dalhousie.

    2. Recently, international students have been facing issues with employment. It has become extremely difficult to find co-ops. Additionally, within some faculties, students lack in terms of leadership skills since the societies do not organize any events that promote leadership building. I will try to organize effective workshops with Advising Centres and societies to populate the students with skills needed in this competitive market.

    3. I will work on creating regular newsletters or information sessions to keep international students informed about important updates, resources, or events.

▼ DESCRIBE AND DISCUSS ONE STUDENT ISSUE THAT MATTERS TO YOU.

Lately, a lot of students have been facing issues due to the housing crisis. It has become extremely difficult to find an affordable private room in Halifax hence students are forced to share rooms or live far away from the University. A lot of their day time goes into commuting making them less productive in their academic tasks and activities outside of the classroom.

WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT, AND WHY?

I am passionate about fostering inclusivity and diversity within the student community. Organizing events to promote these values within the students' community will witness a positive impact on individuals. I am driven by the belief that every student, regardless of their background, should feel welcomed, supported, and empowered during their academic journey.
