The Humanity Behind the Sciences

The Humanity Behind the Sciences Society aims to help create a more inclusive and cognitively diverse science culture by highlighting the values behind research and teaching at Dalhousie University. Through interviews with professors and researchers, we explore the motivations behind scientific work, how personal experiences shape research questions, and the ways diverse perspectives influence science and health. Science does not exist in a vacuum as what society chooses to study and what it overlooks reflects our values and systems of power. By encouraging conversations around how personal identity influences scientific practice, we aim to challenge the idea that science is completely detached from the people who practice it. We also aim to acknowledge the interdisciplinary nature of science and how it intersects with other disciplines or skillsets. Our interviews are transformed into accessible articles and media so students can see that our identities are not separate from science, but strengthen the way we engage with it. By humanizing science and showcasing diverse pathways into academia, we hope to instil a sense of belonging in undergraduate students entering the sciences and help bridge the gap between scientific research and the communities it serves.

Dalhousie Neurological health society

The Dalhousie Neurological Health Society aims to be a student led society focused on neurological health, disease awareness, and education. Our purpose is to create a welcoming space for students to learn about neurological diseases and conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, migraine, Visual disorders and other disorders of the brain and nervous system. Membership is open to all Dalhousie students, regardless of faculty or program, including students interested in science, health care, neuroscience, psychology, nursing, medicine, rehabilitation, social work, and community health.
Our society is unique because it is not designed to represent a single academic major or department. Instead, we aim to bring together students from different disciplines who share an interest in neurological health from clinical, scientific, social, and community perspectives. By focusing specifically on neurological conditions, we hope to complement other existing student societies while offering a distinct space for awareness, advocacy, education, and interdisciplinary discussion.
Our goals include organizing speaker events, awareness campaigns, educational social media content, fundraisers, and collaborations with campus and community organizations. Through these initiatives, we aim to promote greater understanding of neurological conditions, support relevant causes, and encourage students to think critically and compassionately about the impact of neurological disease on individuals, families, and communities.

Dalhousie Interactive GameDev (DIG)

Dal Interactive Gamedev (DIG) is a student society and student-run game development studio. Students interested in any aspect of game development are welcome to join our various fun social and learning events with a passionate community. Members of all experience levels and skill sets can participate in workshops and networking events, and have the opportunity to work collaboratively on projects at DIG.

The society mainly hosts game dev-related events such as workshops and training to teach about game development in general and game development tools.

The society would also serve as a networking hub for students, mentors and industry

SODALES - The Dalhousie and King's Debate Society

Sodales provides the opportunity for Dalhousie and King’s College students to engage in competitive and non-competitive debates on a range of topics. We debate in two different styles throughout the year, British Parliamentary in the Fall, and Canadian Parliamentary in the Winter. Throughout the year, we provide a range of learning opportunities through training days and seminars as well as weekly practices.

For those who are interested, we provide partially funded opportunities to attend debate tournaments locally, nationally, and internationally. Sodales also provides debate leadership opportunities through our exec positions and opportunities to serve on the organisation committees of the 3 to 4 debate tournaments we host each year.

Beyond debate, Sodales also organizes social events to grow to culture of our society and to foster discussion in a less formal setting.
