Dalhousie Aquaculture Student Society
Dalhousie Aquaculture Student Society (DASS) is a student-led undergraduate society open to everyone with an interest in the cultivation and rearing of aquatic organisms for scientific and industrial purposes. Our goal is to give students knowledge, connections, and advice to be able to work and study in aquaculture.
Dalhousie Aquaculture Student Society (DASS) is a student-led undergraduate society open to everyone with an interest in the cultivation and rearing of aquatic organisms for scientific and industrial purposes. DASS welcomes people interested in the many facets of aquaculture including fish, shellfish, microorganisms, engineering, and more. Our goal is to give students knowledge, connections, and advice to be able to work and study in aquaculture.
As a society we organize hands-on activities to give students with a passion for aquatic species a deeper knowledge of aquaculture. Some activities we hope to organize this year include tours of local and international aquaculture facilities and research labs, studying larval species under microscopes, discussing cultivation methods, and exploring aquaculture technology. The biggest reason to join DASS is to gain knowledge and friendships from upper year students. Our exec team and members have different experiences within the field thus we organize meetings on picking classes, getting co-ops, choosing SEASIDE courses, doing honours research, getting applicable job opportunities, and more. We want to develop a deep sense of community and friendship within the societies, thus we organize intramural sports to foster these connections.
DASS wants to give students in this niche field of study connections with professors, potential employers, and peers to gain future opportunities. We host meetings and activities where students' interest and knowledge can be explored. We hope all people interested in or wanting to learn about aquaculture come to this inclusive and safe space. If you would like to join or have any questions feel free to email us at violetchilvers@dal.ca or send us a DM on instagram @dalaquasociety.

We are Dalhousie's chapter for Global Engineering Brigades! Our society is partnered with Global Brigades (GB) which is an organization whos mission is to create sustainable health systems for communities in need (for us, communities in Honduras).
During the year we fundraise for this project and collect money for both our airfare to Honduras as well as money that goes directly to GB to fund their operation year round.
At the end of April, our group of volunteers will go to Honduras and get to work first hand with GB staff and community members to design a water system for a community in need.

Dalhousie Biomedical Engineering Society (DBES)
We aim to foster a sense of community for students in the Biomedical Engineering program.
Our society mainly organizes social events for our students and facilitates communication between between students and the faculty. This is all in an effort to foster a sense of community in our program. This is important because our students come from very diverse scientific backgrounds and work on a diverse set of research problems. But, we are also physically separated in buildings across the 3 Halifax campuses.
