Dalhousie Women's Rugby Football Club (DWRFC)

The Dalhousie Women's Rugby Football Club is a competitive team within the University Women's Club League that provides high-quality practice and competition with other teams within Nova Scotia. Given the growing interest in the club over recent years, we have plans to expand to two teams in 2023; one competing in the Rugby NS senior women's fall league as we have in years past, and one with a season based on exhibition games against AUS and ACAA teams. While we are still working through preparations, and this will be a new approach for us, these are our goals for the upcoming year.

The Dalhousie Women's Rugby Football Club is a competitive club rugby team within the University Women's Club League that provides high-quality practice and
competition with other teams within Nova Scotia. Our club intends to welcome players of any skill level into a safe, positive, and fun team environment while still effectively representing the skill that Dalhousie rugby players hold.

All levels of ability/experience are encouraged to join the team and become involved in the rugby family. As a club team (i.e., non-varsity), we value growth and development from all skill levels and provide the opportunity for this to occur. There is no formal tryout process, and playing time is determined based on a combination of skill and commitment to the team. Practices provide introductory training/drill sessions, contact practice, fitness, sprint training, ball handling, position-specific skills, and practice/touch games. There are also gym training sessions. Games are typically played on weekends but sometimes held in the evenings on weekdays. We play teams at a variety of different levels, including local rugby clubs to University varsity teams.

The DWRUFC aims to provide an engaging yet manageable, fun yet competitive, and challenging yet accessible program to all students that are interested in the sport of rugby.

Dalhousie Kabaddi Club (DKC)

The Dalhousie Kabaddi Club aims to bring the ancient Indian sport of Kabaddi to Dalhousie, showing students a side of Indian culture they likely have not heard of. Club members will regularly play short games against each other, great for easing the mind and body from the stressors of student life.

The purpose of the club is to bring the ancient Indian sport of Kabaddi to
Dalhousie, potentially further enriching the already rich Indian culture on
campus through sport. The aim of the club is to add a form of entertainment
and enjoyable physical exercise for students to be able to implement into
their daily lives.

The members of the club will partake in frequent games
against each other and some of the more experienced player of kabaddi will
partake in coaching the less experienced, ensuring safe play. Participation in
sport can be a important tool in leading a healthy lifestyle, providing the
physical activity many student are severely lacking due to their strenuous
studies, effecting both their physical and mental health. So this society will
help alleviate the effects of the daily stressors in student life through the
enjoyment of both its sporting activities and its sociocultural elements.

Dalhousie Tennis Club

The Dalhousie Tennis Club is a student-run society that is open to all students interested in playing on our competitive team or improving their skills through recreational tennis events that our club hosts in the fall. Our competitive team competes against teams from across Atlantic Canada in the Atlantic University Tennis League(AUTL), with the winner qualifying for a spot at the University Tennis Nationals. We host recreational tennis events open to all community members looking to improve their skills, or for those looking to try tennis out for the first time.

The Dalhousie Tennis Club aims to create a fun and competitive environment for interested students to improve and develop their tennis skills. The competitive men’s and women’s teams practice 2-3 times through the school year and compete in the Atlantic University Tennis League, attempting to qualify for Nationals as the regional representative. The club also runs occasional fundraisers and “try tennis” events for community members interested in learning more about the sport at a recreational level. In the past school year, the club had 25 members who practiced and competed throughout the year, with 5 members as club executives.

The Dalhousie Tennis Club is important for the student community because it provides an opportunity for students to continue improving and developing their tennis skills in a friendly community. The club also provides a space for students to improve their health and wellbeing, as regular practices and fitness sessions ensure students have some time away from school. Lastly, the club has an important social aspect, as it has helped cultivate friendships between students and create a greater sense of identity with the Dalhousie community.

Often, people think of wellness as a state of health rather than mental and physical well-being. We want to show that wellness is a journey rather than an end result. There are various methods and activities that foster well being and it is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. For example, meditation is not only in the form of stillness and silence but can also be done through walking, yoga, reading, etc. Although, when we use the word ‘meditate’ people often only think of remaining silently in place for an extended period of time. As students ourselves, we know how hectic life can get and are hoping to show various wellness routines to help encourage students to incorporate them into their personal lives.

This club will allow students to hold each other accountable in their journey and particular habits as well as hold weekly meetings to discuss progress and show each other support! Even for those who have yet to start their own wellness journey, they can still feel free to come and learn more about the possible paths they can take.
